In-class Journal #1 (two parts): (Suggested 10 minutes)

Part One: What do the terms lower-income, middle-income, and upper-income mean to you? Be specific.  Be sure to use your basic writing skills from Eh 123/124!

Part Two: How do people from different economic backgrounds relax and have fun, or recreate (play)? Describe how you envision lower-income, middle-income, and upper-income people your age recreating.  What are the similarities and differences between these groups, as you see them?

Group activities: (Suggested 7 minutes)

Part One: Share your findings with each other, go into good detail. Have a recorder keep good notes.

Group Presentation: (Suggested: 5 minutes)

One member from each group will present the group’s findings to the class from the front of the class. The presenter is not allowed to lean on the podium, and must make sure that they speak in an audible, passionate voice.

Class Discussion: (Suggested 10 mins)

Discuss the findings and the concepts of “lower-income, middle-income, and upper-income.” What do they mean?

Group/Class  Conversation: (Suggested: 5-7 Minutes)

How is “play” represented in “The Untold Lie”? Why might play look the way it does here?  Might this relate to issues of income? Why?

Homework: Re-Reading Assignment:

Re-read  “The Untold Lie” by Sherwood Anderson

Two-Page Assignment:

Part One:  Identify and comment on specific character details in the story that do not directly relate to our definition for play.

Part Two: Once you have identified important character details that do not directly relate to our concept of play, I want you to do the following:  Describe how these details may be considered against those details that do relate to play. Explain to me how an understanding of both “sets” of details can broaden your understanding of individual “characters” in this story.
