Eh 200 Spring 2011: MWF Week Four Day One
Homework Review: (Suggested: 10 Minutes)
Homework:
Read “The Gift of The Magi,” annotate for play, income, class, and setting. Submit a one-page blog past on how these concepts are or are not related. You will need to cite good evidence to support your argument.
There really were no exceptional examples on the blog…so….
Mini-mini-Lecture:
When we quote we always do three things: we introduce the quote, we present the quote, and we explain its relevance to our claim.
This is a 123, 124 issue: not a 200 issue.
Mini-lecture.
MLA Mini-lecture: (Suggested: 5-7 minutes)
When we cite, we will be using MLA standards. No APA in this class. Just MLA.
When we use a quote, we always need to do several things
-
Introduce the quote:
For example: The narrator writes, “….”
Present the quote with MLA information. For example: “The narrator writes, “It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times” (PN).
Note: You do not need to include the author’s name if it is obvious from the context. For example, if the reader knows the above quote comes from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, there is no need to include (Dickens 1). All you would need would be the page number (1).
Also note, when you are in the same paragraph and quoting multiple times from the same page — for example (3) — you only include the page number for the first quote, and you do not present it again until you bring in an example from another page:
For example, The narrator explains, “It was cold today” (3). He then says that, “It was cold yesterday, too.” Because both examples come from page 3, you only use 3 the first time. However, if you bring in an example from page 4 or any other page, you need to indicate it. This rule is reset every time you begin a new paragraph.
Journal Entry: (Suggested: 5-7)
What are the details that stand out to you the most in O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi.” Why do you think this is the case? Use out basic class concepts to frame your response.
Group Discussion: (Suggested: 5 Minutes)
