Eh 200 Spring 2011: Week Ten Class Two

Filed under: Uncategorized — assistantprofessorcrowley @ 1:10 pm

Last time we did the following:

Let’s return to the prompt:

Your job is to draft an argument on how and why specific events described in two of these stories either share or present different assessments of how social standing impacts understandings of work.

Many of us came up with thesis statements that were general comments on culture, work or play. We sounded like fortune cookies. Few of us come up with thesis statements that were specific to a comparison of the two stories.

Issue 1) Thesis statements: Must be specific to your consideration of these two stories.

Issue 2) Very frequently, our warrants – our explanations for how our evidence supported our claims – were underdeveloped. You should be shooting for at least three sentences in your warrants.

Issue 3) There was a general disregard for the three-step process and MLA conventions. These things are not optional, and neither are proper font style and size.

We will work on these aspects of our papers today.

Revise Final Draft for Wednesday.

Let’s get out those drafts:

Journal: (Suggested: 10 Minutes)

Explain to me how this draft is a better draft in terms of the three areas of concern we focused on last time.

Hand In Papers

Transition in to Unit Three: Pragmatic American Dreams

In-class Journal #2: (Suggested: 10-15 minutes)

Part One: What are social issues? What does that phrase mean to you when it is used to describe things going on in society?

Part Two: What are the major or dominant social issues you are seeing in the readings so far? What do these issues tell us about the worlds of work and play? Use examples that relate to character, setting, plot and tone to shape your response, and be specific!

Group discussion of journal writing: (Suggested:5-10 minutes)

Group Presentations: (Suggested: 5-7 minutes)

Class discussion: (Suggested: 5-7 minutes)

New Concept: Point-of-view

Homework

Pre-write: 1 page What is the American Dream?

Read: I Stand Here ironing by Tille Olsen 446-455

Post-reading writing: What can the point-of-view(s) in I Stand Here Ironing tell us about the American Dream as Olsen is presenting the concept?
