Week Four Mini-Review: (Suggested: 10 Minutes)
Last Week:
We began work on our five-page paper, which you will be getting back today and completing Thursday, though I will take it earlier if you want to turn it in earlier. I will not take it later. I will take nothing after class on Thursday.
We talked about Secondary Sources, and what is or is not an appropriate secondary source in a University-level paper.
We talked about the challenges of research, and will do so again today.
We talked about what an argument is.
We talked about Social Issues and how stories are frequently arguments about social issues.
We talked about the American Dream, and how it relates to the stories we have read.
We talked about how the semester will end.
Homework Review: (Suggested: 10 Minutes)
Your Homework for today was to do the following:
For Today:
1) One page blog post that A) defines the social issue and B) generally explains its relevance in the story of your choosing (use class concepts to articulate your response).
Here are some slightly edited examples from the blog:
1) Health literacy is the social issue I have chosen. Health literacy is defined in Healthy People 2010 as: “The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” ….This relates to “The Untold Lie” because low health literacy is found in people who can’t speak English, have poor use of English, limited education, low income, minorities, immigrants, limited access to healthcare, and over 65 years of age. The main character Ray has limited education, limited access, and low income. He does not have enough money to meet the basic needs of his family so he would not have money for a doctor or health insurance. He would not be receiving preventive healthcare
2)Social issues are defined as issues that affect people that need to be resolved. One of the issues is alcoholism. Alcoholism is defined as, drinking alcoholic beverages at a level that interferes with physical health, mental health, and social, family, or job responsibilities. With this definition we can explain how this affects people, and relate it the story of “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets” where this social issue is prevalent…. Relating this to “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets” we can use the Mother, Mary Johnson, as a prime example of an alcoholic. She fits the definition above perfectly. Her alcoholism affects how she is as a Mother, and she spends more time on her drinking than she does on her kids.
3) Child abuse is a serious problem in today’s society. Child abuse can fall into many categories such as physical, emotional or sexual. While all these forms are very different, they can all cause great pain and suffering to children as they grow through life and become adults. Unfortunately, some people have had first hand experience with child abuse. Thankfully, the only experience I have had has been through reading “Maggie: A girl of the streets.” Through the story, it is well stated that Maggie’s mother, Mary, is a vicious alcoholic with uncontrollable rages and takes out her anger on her children. Throughout the story, there are various forms of child abuse that are revealed. Mary is described as having massive shoulders that heaved with anger. Almost every snippet where Mary is mentioned, is about drinking heavily, yelling and beating. She is constantly beating Jimmie for fighting, and beating Maggie for nothing.
The important thing here is to be able to articulate a connection between a social issue and the story. Many of you did that.
Your second assignment was the following:
A two page description of what your intended field is and how you anticipate the social issue in question impacting your work experience. You will find that if you incorporate good secondary sources into this document, your work next week will be _much_ easier.

Get it out, read it and circle what you think are the most important sentences in it.
Part Two: (Suggested: 10 Minutes)
Let’s get into groups and pass our papers around. Read each other work, and comment as needed on obvious typographical errors.
Part Three: (Suggested: 5-10 Minutes)
When you are done reading each other’s papers, I would like you to come up with a statement that does the following:
Identifies the social issues and intended fields of the group members, and also the sources. As a group, you will be describing your research process to the class.
Part Four: (Suggested: 5-10 Minutes)
The third part of your assignment for today was to create the first three slides of your power point presentation. I want to share these with your group members, explain how and why you have set them up.

Our goals for this week are to complete the written portion of the presentation and get ready for the presentation itself.
To that end, I want to take the next 20 minutes of class time expanding on your two-page document. (Suggested: 10 Minutes)
1) Look back through the document and highlight areas where you think you can expand or go into more detail. Mark these portions of the paper, and then, either on the back of the paper or in your notebook, write a few lines about A) why it would make sense to go into more detail and B) what you might say here to provide the audience with a clearer understanding of what it is you are trying to say.
2) (Suggested: 5-10 Minutes) In new groups, I want you do talk about where you want to expand in your paper, and how it is you plan on doing so.
